JOB DESCRIPTION

Responsibilities
  
The successful candidate is expected to assume high level of responsibilities for the Microbiology Section which include:

Grade 3 Scientist:

  • Oversight of daily operation
  • Ensure Quality Control and Quality Assurance is performed based on requirements
  • Ensure compliance with managerial and technical requirements of Standard ISO 15189
  • Ensure regulatory and accreditation requirements are always maintained
  • Assist with recruitment of staff for the Pathology Department

  
Grade 4 Scientist: (Including Grade 3 Scientist responsibilities)
  

  • Overseeing equipment procurement needs
  • Initiate and lead quality improvement activities
  • Handling complaints by investigating and responding
  • Participate in the ongoing maintenance of Quality System and accreditation requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

The Role
  
A highly driven and systematic Scientist to lead a Microbiology team within a Pathology Department, this role will be appointed as either Grade 3 or Grade 4 according to qualifications and experience.

Extensive experience in a Pathology (Diagnostic) Microbiology laboratory, including bacterial culture, identification and sensitivity testing is essential for this position. 

Minimum Requirements for this role:

  • A Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent with a major in Microbiology
  • Sound understanding of accreditation requirements for diagnostic laboratories
  • Post graduate qualifications are desirable
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills
  • A satisfactory National Criminal History Record Check, Victorian 'Employee' Working with Children Check and completion of a Commonwealth of Australia Statutory Declaration prior to commencement of employment


Grade 3 Scientist:

  • Minimum of 5 years full time experience as a Medical Scientist within Microbiology
  • Have the knowledge, skills, and competency to lead a Microbiology team within a Pathology Department
  • Have the capability to provide advice and expertise to the Department’s stake holders

Grade 4 Scientist:

  • Minimum of 10 years full time experience as a Medical Scientist within Microbiology
  • Have the knowledge, skills, and competency to lead a Microbiology team within a Pathology Department
  • Have the capability to provide advice and expertise to the Department’s stake holders
  • Have significant experience with Quality systems, quality improvement and equipment evaluation and procurement
  • Previous experience in a managerial role

Education:
University - Bachelor's Degree/3-4 Year Degree
