In collaboration with oncology physicians and other healthcare professionals, the Clinical Oncology pharmacist is directly and indirectly involved in the care of the cancer patient with regards to the prescribing, preparation, dispensing, administering and monitoring of medications and chemotherapeutic agents in the oncology infusion site, hospital and the health system.  The Clinical Oncology Pharmacist reviews, interprets, and processes physician orders, screening them for appropriateness of regimen, accuracy, allergies, food-drug interactions, drug-drug interactions, and monitors  lab values as needed for potential interactions and participates in a double check internal pharmacist process for oncology medications prepared anywhere at the facility.  The Clinical Oncology Pharmacist also reviews, interprets, and processes patient assessment information, which includes past medical history, current medication history, pregnancy/lactation status, allergies, current lab values, and any other information pertinent to the care of the patients. 


The Clinical Oncology Pharmacist is responsible for planning, organizing and supporting the overall operation of the Clinical Oncology Pharmacy Service; ensures compliance with patient care quality standards as they relate to the care provided to all age groups of patients. Works collaboratively with the health care team to provide a comprehensive scope of clinical pharmacy services which help to optimize medication use, enhance patient safety, and ensure effective resource management by using appropriate pharmacotherapeutic principles. Responsible for the development of an inventory, distribution, and delivery system for oncological medications.


The oncology pharmacist will prepare or direct the preparation of all intravenous preparations employing appropriate aseptic technique and adhering to all personal protective equipment (PPE) guidelines and regulations.  As regulatory standards change over time, the oncology pharmacist will meet the needs of those new requirements, as they become the standard of the profession. 


The Clinical Oncology Pharmacist will be responsible for develop of policies and procedures regarding the safe preparation of oncological products. The Clinical Oncology Pharmacist is responsible for the development of policies, procedures and training of the Pharmacy staff and Hospital personnel on the preparation, administration, and disposal of oncological products and their waste products.


May be required to work different shifts, weekends, and holidays.



  • B.S. degree or Pharm.D from an accredited College of Pharmacy
  • Two years of Clinical Pharmacist experience
  • 2+ yrs experience in an acute care environment or as an oncology pharmacist
  • ASHP residency preferred but not required
  • Advanced Pharmacotherapy Specialist certification preferred
  • Very good communication skills, both verbal and written

University - Bachelor's Degree/3-4 Year Degree
