JOB DESCRIPTION

Reporting to:  General Plant Manager, North America 

1.Objective of Position

The Plant Controller is a critical member of the Leadership Team, contributing to all areas of plant management and providing strong financial leadership. The Plant Controller will plan and coordinate plant budget and business planning activities in alignment with segment and corporate objectives, policies, and practices. This position will provide financial direction to the Factory and provide recommendations to improve site performance. The Plant Controller is an “operational accountant” who understands industrial manufacturing.  The Factory is a 750,000 square foot industrial manufacturing facility with over 1,200 employees and is the foundation of the North America Commercial business.  This position oversees the finance, accounting and payroll staff.

2.Responsibilities

  • Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger, inventory, standard cost accounting and SOX controls for plant operations.
  • Manage month-end, quarterly, and annual closing, prepares and presents financial statements and other associated reports for site
  • Analyze variances and communicates explanations to management with recommended actions
  • Prepare forecasts of income statement, balance sheets, and statement of cash flows for the plant
  • Integrate and train new staff while leading the continued professional development of the existing team
  • Provide proactive / unsolicited consultation, interpretation and education of complex financial and operational matters to various departmental leaders used to drive business decisions
  • Collaborate with General Plant Manager, Plant Leadership Team, and Finance Team to explain results, make improvements, manage projects, identify inefficiencies, understand operations and lead the development of complex analysis
  • Monitor and implement plant internal controls to ensure reporting integrity, safeguard company assets, and identify risks
  • Develop and manages Plant capital expenditure process
  • Lead, coach, develop and mentor staff
  • Ensure proper accounting in accordance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles as well as local statutory requirements
  • Estimate product costs to support quoting activities

  • Manages the hiring, direction, assessment and development of team members.

4.Key Organizational Relationships

The success of the Plant Controller will be dictated largely by the effectiveness of his/her relationship with the following:

 

  • The General Plant Manager is the key business partner to the Plant Controller and works in close and collaborative partnership to assess immediate, mid-term and long-range needs.  Relies on the Plant Controller as a key confidant in making critical decisions affecting the performance of the factory.

 

  • The Plant Leadership Team meets throughout the month to determine to course of the business.  The Plant Controller must have a strong working relationship with all his peers in the Stuttgart Leadership Team in order to understand the direction of the business and how the priorities fit within that direction.  The Plant Leadership Team consists of:

 

  • Directors of Operations in Fabrication and Assembly
  • Director, Engineering
  • Director, Materials
  • Director, HR
  • Director, Quality
  • Sr. Safety Manager
  • IT Manager

 

  • The Vice President, Finance and the Director of Finance/Controller  – Commercial  work closely with the Plant Controller to ensure that the Plant finance team has the resources, support, and information necessary to ensure effective management.  The VP, Finance and Director of Finance/Controller help to broker services from all LII Corporate teams to ensure that the Plant finance team can effectively carry out its mission.

5.Success Criteria

 

The Plant Controller is successful 3 Years from now if:

  • Year over year improvement of factory financials each year
  • The plant achieves the objectives of the three-year road map
  • The Plant Manager has achieved cost, quality and delivery targets
  • Finance talent is upgraded and a clear succession plan is in place within the plant finance/accounting team

  • Bachelor's Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. CPA or equivalent preferred
  • Demonstration of key finance competencies, qualifications and leadership capabilities with 8 or more years of experience at the Controller level with emphasis in cost accounting and budgeting
  • Experience leading cost accounting, financial reporting and budgeting/forecasting activities
  • Experience with managing and developing others
