Staff Accountant Job Overview
The Staff Accountant is responsible for maintaining the accuracy of general ledger accounts, accounts payable processing and banking; provides analysis of accounting transactions to assist the finance team and Controller in the preparation of financial statements, regulatory reports, budgets and forecasts.
Maintaining overall accuracy of the general ledger
Key aspects of the monthly financial closing process, including preparation of journal entries, account reconciliations, analyses and financial reports
Determining the correctness and accuracy of transaction activity. Investigate and resolve discrepancies; interacting with peers and senior management as necessary. Making corrections where necessary.
Evaluating work processes, recommending improvements in order to increase efficiency and accuracy
Identifying internal control weaknesses; proposing and implementing corrective actions
Performing monthly account analyses and preparing work paper documentation
Computing depreciation and accrued expense calculations
Preparing and reconciling daily cash reports; reconciling bank accounts monthly
Reconciling intercompany accounts and transactions
Providing analytical support to the Revenue & AR Accountant, Senior Accountant, Controller and President
Responding to requests for analyses and information from senior management, including Superintendent and President.
Crosstraining with Senior Accountant to perform all aspects of accounts payable processing
Crosstraining with Revenue & AR Accountant to perform all aspects of that role and payroll processing.
Preparing annual sales tax returns, quarterly HUT returns and various regulatory report (JCOPE)
Serving as liaison between outside auditors and finance team; lead the annual audit, including preparation of reports and responding to inquiries.
Preparing annual operating budget
Boxing records and maintaining document retention inventory in Excel
Writing procedures for all assigned tasks; updating as necessary, ensuring procedures are current and accurate
Assisting Controller with implementation of new software and technology and with training staff
Completing other duties and tasks as requested by the Controller and President
Bachelor’s degree in accounting and business administration or related field is required.
5+ years experience in a similar role.
Able to demonstrate specific instances of outstanding service, including identifying and anticipating needs, delivering to expectations and follow through.
Demonstrates a strong attention to detail; identifying and correcting errors in text or number sequences.
Ability to work independently in completing assigned duties.
Demonstrates commitment to producing work that is accurate the first time.
Strong organizational skills that permeate all aspects of work from organizing the physical work space, to filing, to time and deadline management.
Strong communications skills, both verbal and written, coupled with excellent listening skills. Able to adjust communication style in order to effectively convince or persuade others at any level of the organization.
Demonstrates initiative, perseverance and creativity in meeting stated objectives, able to effectively problem-solve around challenges to achieve objectives.
Understanding of the accounting function and its role in external and regulatory reporting
Able to convey understanding of accounting concepts to non-financial employees when necessary
Commitment to accuracy, thoroughness, attention to detail and completing work assignments on schedule
Good critical thinking skills and sound judgment in decision-making
Experience working with business accounting / ERP systems
University - Bachelor's Degree/3-4 Year Degree
