Large businesses and high wealth private groups operating in Australia make a significant contribution to the Australian economy and play a critical role in our tax system. They are also important to supporting community confidence in our tax system. 

In our work we focus on providing assurance to Government and the community that we are doing all that we can to support multinational enterprises, public and privately owned and wealthy groups operating in Australia to pay the right amount of tax in Australia and sustainably reduce the tax gap. 

We work closely with large businesses and high wealth private groups, their advisers and representative bodies to provide greater certainty about their tax obligations and support their understanding of the tax system to encourage voluntary compliance. Our assurance programs obtain greater confidence that large businesses are paying the right amount of tax while our active compliance programs include risk assessments and audits to address instances of potential non-compliance.

This is an opportunity to work with experienced tax specialists in a number of different areas in our income tax and Goods and Services Tax (GST) programs for large publicly listed, multinational and private groups. There are various opportunities in our assurance and active compliance programs and our international areas including: 

• multinational and domestic tax avoidance, 
• Diverted Profits Tax, Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS) and 
• international tax structuring 
• domestic structuring for private groups, including the use of trusts 

As an EL1 tax specialist, you will be a key member of a collaborative team with potential to influence and shape the domestic and international tax systems. As a recognised tax specialist with a record of achievement in the field(s) of taxation, accounting, commerce or law, your commercial experience will be invaluable to your role. As a team member working in one of the taskforce work programs, you will improve tax compliance in an advisory, analytical, compliance or assurance review role. 

An EL1 Tax Specialist has demonstrated experience and skills in some of the following areas: 

Tax risk and tax technical (income tax and GST) 
- Understand, engage and treat common and emerging income tax and GST issues facing publicly listed and multinational taxpayers and private groups associated with wealthy individuals 
- Undertake and manage complex end to end assurance or compliance activity, including risk identification, technical analysis and preparation of legal positions 
- Provide quality advice on tax compliance risks and tax law policy development 
- Identification and dealing with aggressive tax planning, including the application of integrity measures 
- Understand and have practical experience in: 
o mergers and acquisitions, restructures and transactions cross-border tax structuring 
o undertaking tax due diligence and identifying areas of risk from tax and financial information 
o interpreting complex financial and legal documents and reporting findings in a concise, commercial manner 
o offshore investment portfolios, examine foreign holding structures and seek information from other jurisdictions 
o the application of Australia’s tax treaties to common international structures 
o common international tax planning techniques and arrangements including tax effective financing, profit repatriation and exit strategies 
o broad legal analysis and research in Australian and International tax law to identify, monitor and address emerging tax planning techniques 
- Understand and have practical experience in treating traditional and emerging risks for private groups associated with wealthy individuals including: 
o scrutinising complex structures and transactions and limited financial disclosure obligations of large private groups, including the effect of domestic structuring in regards to related party dealings 
o deep understanding of the use of trusts, particularly complex trust structures and the misalignment between trust, equity and common law associated with trusts with generally accepted accounting and income tax law concepts that can give rise to opportunities for tax minimisation, tax avoidance or inappropriate tax outcomes 
o profit extraction from private groups, expansion of private groups, restricting issues and retirement/succession planning 
o property development and construction industry and financing experience are desirable 
o understanding the economic performance of a group 

Accounting or financial statement analysis 
- Analyse and interpret financial statements 
- Forensic accounting , tax reconciliations, business risk management skills and experience 
- Demonstrate tax and corporate governance knowledge and practical experience 
- Demonstrate experience with enterprise resource planning systems and accounting systems commonly used by large companies 
- Apply a range of information technology applications and/or research tools to assess performance and risks

- Work independently and as part of a collaborative team 
- Deliver a project in a timely manner and effectively deal with contingencies

Our ideal candidate has: 
- knowledge and experience of the income tax and GST legislative and financial environments, particularly in the areas of large public groups, multinational enterprises, private groups 
- an understanding and experience of the structures and tax planning approaches used in the multinational enterprises and large public groups, private groups and high wealth individual markets 
- achieved outcomes within set time frames 
- negotiated with clients and stakeholders using professional judgement and knowledge to influence outcomes 
- develop less experienced staff to make technical decisions 
- a degree in tax, accounting, commerce or law 
- 5+ years’ experience in the tax, accounting or law fields (ideally from a mid-tier or big 4 firm) 

University - Bachelor's Degree/3-4 Year Degree
